Education, not medical care

This is the most important page on the site, so it is written in plain language rather than legal language.

What this is

Digital Detox Lab is an educational program about digital habits, drawing on published behavioural research. It is written to help you understand what your technology use is doing and to give you a structured way to change it.

What it is not

It is not a medical or psychological service. Nothing here is a diagnosis, a treatment, or therapy, and using it does not create a doctor-patient or therapist-client relationship. Your "archetype" is an educational description derived from the answers you gave. It is a way of organising a plan, not a clinical finding.

Where the material comes from

Some of it is adapted from clinical and behavioural research — the sleep material borrows from stimulus control, a component of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia. Adapted for self-directed education and delivered without clinical supervision, it is not the same intervention. The strength of the evidence behind each recommendation varies, and we label it rather than flattening everything into "science-backed".

No promise of results

Research on digital wellbeing interventions shows real but modest average effects, and some studies find no effect at all. We say so on the science page. Nobody can tell you in advance what this will do for you.

When to talk to someone instead

Please see a health professional if you have persistent insomnia, anxiety or low mood, or if your technology use is seriously interfering with your work, your relationships or your health. This program is not a substitute for that, and it is not designed to be used in place of care you already need.

If you are in crisis

If you are thinking about harming yourself, please do not use a self-help program. In Canada, call or text 9-8-8 for the Suicide Crisis Helpline, any time. In Quebec, 8-1-1 reaches Info-Santé for health advice. If someone is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
